Trucker’s Split-Second Decision Ends High-Speed Police Pursuit of Murder Suspect
Pomona, CA – A trucker’s split-second decision put an end to a nearly two-hour police pursuit of a man wanted for murder in California.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), the high speed vehicle chase began at approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Riverside when the driver of a pickup truck, identified as 35-year-old Michael Caleb Reed, evaded arrest.
Reed was wanted in connection to the killing of Michael Lewis, 40, of Oildale, on March 28, as well as a recent carjacking, police said.
Local outlet KGET reported Reed also has a lengthy criminal history and has had previous arrests for rape, burglary, possession of a firearm, and DUI.
After a nearly two-hour chase through parts of three counties and reaching speeds topping 90 mph, Reed was finally stopped by a big rig at an intersection in Pomona, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
A KTLA news chopper caught the intense moment trucker Ahmed Shaaban pulled his Volvo semi-truck in front of Reed’s pickup to block the interstate.
Reed hit the accelerator and slammed into the front passenger side of the semi-truck, causing the airbags on the pickup truck to deploy and ending the chase.
Reed crawled out of the truck and was taken into custody without further incident.
A female passenger in the pickup can also be seen hanging her arms out of the vehicle after the collision.
Authorities said she was questioned and later released.
“Honest to God, I was thinking just to block the intersection so he cannot pass,” Shaaban told KTLA. “I did not think he would gun his truck the way he did, but he did. He hit me pretty hard.”
When asked why he did it, Shaaban said it was “instinct.”
“It’s natural for me. I would have done this over and over again. That’s how I am. I’m built that way,” he explained.
Shaaban also said he had aspirations of being a police officer before becoming a trucker.
“I wanted to be a cop someday, but I didn’t make, so I built a semi-truck company.”
