Trucker’s U-Turn on Indiana Interstate Leads to Deadly Crash
Daviess County, IN – Charges are pending against a trucker who tested positive for methamphetamine after a crash on Monday afternoon that left one person dead.
The deadly incident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. along Interstate 69.
Indiana State Police (ISP) said Allen Weldy, 38, of Mitchell, IN, was operating a 2017 International semi-truck pulling a flatbed trailer southbound when he missed his exit.
Instead of proceeding to the next exit to turn around, Weldy chose to make a U-turn at the crossover near the 84 mile marker.
When he pulled into the crossover, investigators said he “stopped for a moment” resulting in his trailer “completely blocking the passing lane and partially in the driving lane.”
A 2017 Acura SUV driven by Susan Yoo, 52, of Indianapolis, IN, was traveling southbound behind Weldy.
ISP indicated Yoo “slammed on her brakes” in a desperate attempt to avoid colliding with the semi-trailer.
However, she was unable to do so.
“The SUV collided with the trailer in a heavily over lapping same direction sideswipe,” ISP said. “The SUV then slid off the roadway and down an embankment before coming to rest in a ditch.”
Sadly, Yoo was pronounced dead on scene.
As for Weldy, ISP said he was taken for a Certified Chemical test and found to have methamphetamines in his blood.
He was transported to the Daviess County Jail and incarcerated.
Charges are pending.
