Two Truckers Perish In Collision And Blaze Along Icy Highway

Newberg, Oregon – Two semi drivers perished early Monday morning in a collision and fiery blaze along icy state Highway 18 in Yamhill County, Oregon State Police (OSP) reported.

According OSP Captain Tim Fox, the crash happened around 5:20 a.m. near milepost 57 on the recently opened Newberg/Dundee bypass. A passenger vehicle was also involved in the crash Fox said. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

However, the truck drivers were both pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened, but believe the icy road conditions played a role. Overnight rain or snow, combined with near-freezing temperatures, caused black ice to form on many roads, official said.

Such conditions prompted officials to issue warnings for drivers to slow down and be alert to the treacherous roads.

The identities of the truck drivers have not yet been released as police notify next-of-kin. Transportation Nation Network will provide an update as soon as we can.
