Two U.S. Truck Drivers Arrested in Large Human Smuggling Busts

Laredo, TX – Two commercial truck drivers were arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers this week in separate large human smuggling busts only a few hours apart.

According to CBP, the first incident occurred late in the evening hours of Tuesday, March 3, when a red tractor hauling a white trailer approached the Interstate Highway 35 checkpoint north of Laredo.

During an immigration inspection of the driver, a service K9 alerted to the trailer.

Agents opened the trailer and discovered 57 individuals, all illegally present in the U.S. from the countries of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Ecuador, Peru and Mexico.

CBP reports the individuals and the driver, a United States Citizen, were taken into custody pending further investigation.

A Few Hours Later…

The second incident occurred a short time later during the early morning hours of Thursday, March 4.

CBP agents assigned to the checkpoint on U.S. Highway 83 encountered a cargo truck northwest of Laredo.

During an immigration inspection, a service K9 alerted to the vehicle and agents discovered 24 people inside the cargo area.

The individuals were from the countries of Guatemala and Mexico and found to be illegally present in the U.S.

Agents arrested the driver, a United States Citizen, and each person found in the vehicle.

The truck was seized by CBP.
