U.S. Trucker Arrested in Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust at Southern Border
Laredo, TX — A trucker was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) this week after more than a dozen illegal immigrants were discovered hiding inside a big rig.
On the morning of Thursday, November 11, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents at the I-35 immigration checkpoint encountered a tractor-trailer operated by a U.S. citizen.
During an immigration inspection of the driver and passenger, a service canine alerted to the rig prompting agents to refer the driver to secondary inspection.
While searching the tractor-trailer, CBP said agents discovered individuals “crammed inside the trailer.”
A total of 14 illegal migrants from the countries of Mexico and Guatemala were discovered and arrested along with the truck driver.
CBP did not identify the driver as an investigation remains ongoing.
However, he is expected to face human smuggling charges.
CBP indicated the illegal migrants will be “processed accordingly.”
“We continue to work with other governments, to ensure we deliver a strong message that our borders are not open, and to facilitate the return of their citizens or those with legal status in other countries,” CBP stated.
