U.S. Trucker Arrested in Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust in Texas
Laredo, TX – A trucker from the United States was arrested this week in a large human smuggling bust in Texas.
According to Custom and Border Protection (CBP), the arrest occurred on Monday, April 5 by Laredo Sector Patrol agents working with the United Independent School District (UISD) Police Department.
Border Patrol agents responded to a call for assistance from UISD Police Department officers after they stopped a big rig near the corner of Del Mar Boulevard and Loop 20 in east Laredo.
Agents arrived at the scene and discovered 63 individuals inside the trailer, CBP said.
They were all identified as being illegally present in the U.S. and from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
CBP noted that none of the individuals were wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when found and each person was subsequently provided PPE and medical assistance.
They, along with the driver, whose identity was not revealed due to an ongoing investigation, were taken into custody.
During the search of the tractor-trailer, authorities also found a “small bag of crystal methamphetamines.”
The narcotics, tractor, and trailer were seized by CBP.
