U.S. Trucker Nabbed in Third Large Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust in a Week
Laredo, TX – Last week was a busy one for United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Laredo, TX, as officials intercepted three large human smuggling attempts by truck.
The most recent incident occurred late in the evening hours of Thursday, March 5, when a gray tractor hauling a white trailer approached the Interstate 35 checkpoint.
During an immigration inspection of the driver, a service K9 alerted to the trailer, subsequently prompting agents to open the trailer.
Upon opening the trailer, agents discovered a large group of people inside.
A total of 90 people, including five unaccompanied juveniles, were discovered and removed from the trailer.
All of the people inside were illegally present in the U.S. and were from the countries of the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
The individuals and the driver, a U.S. citizen, were taken into custody pending investigation.
The case was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.
CBP officials say they have seen a surge of human smuggling attempts by truck in recent months.
In fact, just last week, two more U.S. commercial truck drivers were arrested by CBP in separate large human smuggling busts only a few hours apart.
The first occurred late in the evening hours of Tuesday, March 3, followed by another just a few hours later.
