USDOT Secretary Delivers “Big Thank You to America’s Hardworking Truckers”

Washington D.C. – United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Elaine Chao delivered a special message to truckers on Monday as part of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW).

NTDAW kicked off on Sunday with hundreds of companies already taking to social media to thank truckers for their remarkable contributions to our daily way of life.

On Monday, USDOT Secretary Chao released a 2-minute video adding her words of appreciation for America’s truck drivers.

Sec. Chao said this year’s celebration could have more meaning because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Since the COVID-19 crisis, the American people have gained a much greater appreciation of the importance of our nation’s supply chain and for the truckers who help to keep our store shelves stocked with food and supplies while most of us were confined to our homes,” she said. “Despite recent lockdowns and other restrictions, America’s 3.5 million professional truck drivers continue to deliver 70 percent of all freight in the United States.”

She also took the occasion to champion the USDOT and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for its newly issued hours of service (HOS) final rule set to go into effect on September 29.

“Most recently, we updated the HOS rules so that truckers can get the rest that they need, when they need it, and without having to race against the clock. This gives truckers more flexibility, enhances safety and improves efficiency,” Sec. Chao asserted.

She also pointed to President Donald Trump’s well-publicized affinity for truckers.

As an example, she cited a first-of-its-kind event held at the White House earlier this year to honor America’s truck drivers.

“The President also hosted a very special ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House on April 16, 2020 to honor America’s truckers. He knows our economy cannot recover without the movement of supplies, food, medical equipment, and many other things made possible by our truckers… the real American heroes,” she said.

“In the war against the virus, the American truckers are the foot soldiers who are really carrying us to victory,” President Trump said during the event. “To every trucker listening over the radio and behind the wheel, I know I speak for 330 million plus Americans and we say, ‘Thank God for truckers!’”

The event was not without controversy within the trucking community though.
