VIDEO: Man Cheats Death As Runaway CMV Tire Smashes His Jeep
Edison, New Jersey – An off-duty policeman is lucky to be alive after a tire from a commercial vehicle smashed into his Jeep on Route 440 this week.
The tire — which appears to have come from a dump truck — is seen in a video speeding past cars on the busy highway the same direction as moving traffic.
It suddenly jumped the median and slammed into an oncoming Jeep.
Tires can be heard screeching before the video cuts off, leaving viewers wondering what happened next.
Thankfully, the driver of the jeep not only lived to tell his story, but escaped with minor injuries.
“Out of nowhere a tire jumps across the median from the opposite direction into our side of the roadway,” the driver of the Jeep, John Rice, told ABC7.
Rice’s wife, Allison, and their three children were in a car just ahead of Rice’s Jeep.
“Initially I thought please don’t hit my wife… my wife’s in the car in front of me, three kids in the car and that was going through my head, please don’t hit her,” said Rice.
“I thought it was going to come right through my windshield,” Allison told the news station.
Instead, the tire struck the back of Allison’s car and went straight for Rice’s Jeep.
Allison initially feared her husband was killed on impact.
Miraculously, Rice walked away without serious injury.
His Jeep, however, didn’t escape so unscathed.
The vehicle which the tire came from has not been identified.
New Jersey State Police is investigating the incident.
